Hi there, I'm new to this site. My late father Kazimierz Kalinowski was based there aswell. He was with the 1st armoured division under General Maciek. Who did you father serve with and what was his name? Helena

Hello There, How fantastic to hear from you. My fathers name is Antoni Gontar. I have recently researched his military past and was very lucky to discover the following. He was originally with the 2 Polish Troops Base 22 Battalion 4 Company, then on secondment for training with signals platoon 17 signals company, 7 Infantry Division, moving onto 20 Infantry Battelion, 2 Company. He was on secondment with no.35 Military Prison in Italy, then 22 Battalion, 1 Company. He was then on secondment with non commissioned Officers Cadet School at 10 Artillery Battalion for training, back to No. 35 Military Prison (not as a prisoner !) then whilst serving with the 2nd polish corps 8th British Army under Colonal Anders. He was then transferred to the UK where he was enlisted into the polish resettlement corps on 11.11.46 and served at witley until final discharge from the PRC due to absorption into industry with effect from 26.11.47. Apart from the above information which I was lucky to obtain from a very nice lady at the polish army records base at hendon, I do not have much information about his time spent at the camp it would be great if you know of any other people that were at the camp or any other info about the camp. Unfortunately, like many people, questions were not always asked by us children and although I remember some stories told to me as a child, I didnt really understand and it is only now as we get older do we really take an interest in our parents past and really appreciate all that they went through for all of us, the hardship, heartache and pain is unimaginable really. Witley is not too far away from me and I hope to make a trip there one day to see if anything from the camp or its site remains and of course I shall report my findings !. I look forward to hearing any info fondest regards Danek

Try the "Polish Search" at the Ministry of Defence, Bourne Avenue, Hayes, UB3 1RF; tel: 0208 573 3831, (old address and number, may well have changed). They were very helpful in finding my late father's military war record- it came back very detailed, with some real surprises- the sort of thing, like escaping from Russian captivity and making his way to Hungary over the mountains, that was never talked about when we were kids.

My father's discharge papers were stamped with this camp's imprint upon his discharge from the PRC. I have no idea how he ended up in this camp. I was told very little of my father's war time experiences.

Just starting my search for my father's military history and have documentation he was at this camp. It seems that this site is not very active and I cannot find any helpful links to go forwards. I have ID numbers for Resettlement Corps and Wielkopolska 14th Armoured Brigade (2nd Polish Army). I am missing National Army details, he was from Lwow. My brother and I have some great documentation and photos of his time in the 14th Armoured brigade and we are looking for the best sites that have photos in them. Does anybody have some good advice?

Thank you very much for replying. After spending yesterday on the computer we now know from his patches that he went into the British 8th Army after training in Palestine, which is where most of our photos are from. My brother and I are going to go through the process of getting his entire record but need to ask my stepfather to look through our recently deceased Mum's effects for the death certificate. If it can't be found then we will have to get that first. Going to take a while as we now live in Australia. Oh well, in for a penny ....
