Hi,
I'm new to this forum.
My mother worked at Penley Hospital from maybe 1949 to about 1951 as a nurse. Her name was Krystyna Parys.

Hi Marek and anyone that might have photos of Penley hospital from the 50s and 60s. I know the formal history of Penley and would very much like to expand the Penley page on this site so any one who has photos or personal stories of that period I would love to hear from you.

Hi My mum and dad married in Penley in December 1960. I was born in Wrexham in 1962 and then moved to Swindon. Both grandparents worked at the Penley hospital. My dziadek Stefan Piatek worked as a porter and my babcia Anna Piatek I think she was a nurse. Not sure what dziadek Jan and Babcia Jozefa Mordak did but I am sure they also worked at the hospital. I have very fond memories of Penley as I used to spend many happy summer holiday's there. My godmother Zozia Bereza lived next to the hospital as her husband was Dr Bereza and i remember she was always in the kitchen cooking cakes. I also remember pretending to play the organ in the church as dziadek Piatek was the alter boy and used to always go to the church as there was always something to do. I remember the huts my grandparents lived in and have even got a photo of when we all stayed my brother as a baby was put in the bottom of the draw as there was no room for a cot. I also remember going from the huts to the shop or hospital going in between the huts lovely flowers growing and always chatting to people on the camp as they all remembered me. One person in particular was a man in a wheelchair I don't remember his name but he was always there and was very friendly. It is so nice to read other peoples memories even more so since my dad died nearly two years ago and it is too late now to ask questions and find out more information.

Hi Marek, I myself was born at Penley in 1949. I was at university in London with Dr Bereza's son, Andrzej, some 40 years ago. I do have an email address for him and I tried to contact him earlier this year but failed to elicit a response. I know that he prepared a website for Penley hospital some time ago, with pictures of children in national costumes etc. Best wishes Tadeusz

Hi Marek, Tadeusz and Zosia,
I too was born at Penley, in 1946, and my mother was also a nurse there. Her name was Mira Dominiak and we lived in the Family Blocks not far from the cinema. My dziadek, Antoni Horoszko, was also a porter there. I used to play with a girl called Kicia and a boy called Rysiu. We were the only oneswho could get neer the local feral cats, even playing with the new kittens. My mother remarried, as I had lost my father in the war, to Henry Grabowski of Bradford, where we moved in 1953. Yesterday I visited Penley for the first time in over 40 years and it awakened an interest in the place and the history. If anyone out there remembers my mother or me, or Kicia, from those times please get in touch.

I too was born in Penley, 10 October 1948. The family stayed there till latter part of 51 when we immigrated to the US. Both Mother and Father have passed on, but I recall Mother saying that it was the one place, after Russia's concentration camps and the Middle East, that she found some peace. I understand that the Hospital itself was raised (destroyed) in early 2010. Family name is Kolakowski, Father was Porucznik, Polish Intelligence, Anders 2nd Corps, and Mother was in the Signal Corps in the Middle East. They married in Jerusalem, stayed there with the Polish military (British occupation) till 47 I believe before coming to the UK.
I have some photos of the hospital taken by friends just weeks prior to it being taken down if I can find them. It was still in remarkably good condition.

Hi orzel, No the hospital at Penley was not raised. The majority of buildings are still standing but are being used by all sorts of small businesses. I met a chap there who told me that the properties and land are still owned by the Polish government and can't be destroyed without their permission. Even the village school is still a school and not much changed as is the church. There are quite a number of Polish headstones in the graveyard.

I was born at the Penley Hospital on January 4, 1947. My name is Julian Joseph Janik and I now live in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. When I was looking at my parents Passport, there was an address of what the barrack number we stayed at. At least that's what I think it is. It reads: 1 -12C Doddington Park.
I was wondering if you are in the area, if you could possibly locate that number or barrack and get a picture of it and post here or email me.
Ever since I found this website a few days ago, and saw the pictures, it brought back memories of what I remember of my childhood days.
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks,
Julian Janik

Hello Julian, Sadly nothing remainds of the hutted camp in Doddington Park it is all agricultural land. The big house and the tower are still there. I have walked around the estate recently and have photos of the tower which stood in the middle of the camp. If you email me on zosia@northwickparkpolishdpcamp.co.uk I will send you a photo of the tower and the area. Have you seen the page on Penley?

I just found this site after looking for some information on Penley. I was born at Penley on Jan. 27, 1947. My family name is Polkiewicz. Both my parents were at Penley before emigrating to Canada. My dad is still alive. I will see what he has for pictures from the camp.

Hi...just became aware of this site..WOW..sure brings back memories. My name is WOJCIECH JERZY STANISLAW SZESZYCKI,son of DR. LEON WLADYSLAW SZESZYCKI and TERESA MARIA SZESZYCKA(nee UJEJSKA). We arrived in Penley, from Scotland in the fall of 1947 with my baby brother JACEK in tow. I was only 3 years old but I still remember the first day we arrived. I still have mostly fond memories. We lived in camp until 1952...then my dad bought a home in Acton Park in Wrexham and my mom and dad commuted to Penley for the next 4 years. My dad was a surgeon and my mom was a nurse. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw picture of myself in one of the Penley sites as an alter boy! I do remember many events that occurred back then but only a couple of names. In March of 1956 we moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I have no photos of that era except baby photos of myself which don't show much. Been happily married for almost 47 years and I'm sure glad my parents picked Canada to immigrate to. I'm retired so if you feel like going down memory lane then e-mail me at stans4remax@yahoo.ca
