A la Polish Graves at Blockley Cemetary. We are trying to organise a "get-together" of Northwick & Springhill people, their relatives, friends and all who have visited the Polish camps. The objective is to raise much needed funds to restore many of the graves, and also to erect a plaque at the Grotto (Grota) in Northwick, commemorating the mives of many Polish people at the camps. We propose to hold this re-union at The polish Club in Redditch (the nearest "live Polish Community and Parish" to Northwick, where I happen to be the Chairman (Prezes) of the Polish Community.Believe me, the cemetery at Blockley looks very sad and donations will be gladly received if you cannot make the re-union - more details , if you're interested, from me on e-mail sales@allianceseals.com or zosia Biegus will be pleased to pass details onto you, I am sure. Incidentally, we have had some re-unions already, the last one in year 2000 and they were FUN! Pozdrowienia.

Jurek Zdanko suggested I look at this. Very well laid out site. My grandfather was in Northwick Park for a while in the 50s, before moving to Long Marston. Is there a similar site on Long Marston. Some years ago I did a similar project on Leamington Spa, but it is not on the net. incidentally, I remember your father very well, regards, S

What a wonderful website. I was born in the camp in 1953 and left nine years later. Is there any chance that you could get this published as a book. I know my family would love to see it and treasure all those lovely memories. I was only speaking to my sister the other day and she very much remembers the community spirit and support. Thank you for putting this together.

Thank you for giving us a look at part of history often forgotten. I went to a school where there were several youngsters from an estate that had been built in part to rehouse the families from "The Polish Camp". It was located at Hampers Green, on the edge of Petworth, West Sussex. It was inside Petworth Park and had been a camp used by the army many years before. Bogden, who was in my class was a good friend but we lost touch in 1966. If you want to try and trace details of the camp Leconfield Estate in Petworth may be able to help and there were still families in the Town recently.

In refecting upon the schooling at Northwick for the very many children, it is important to make site visitors aware that we had a POLISH primary school up to an age of 11. We learnt Polish History, Polish Geography, our Religion in Polish, our Polish Customs, Polish Songs.... we even learnt basic English, in POLISH ! Games? No such things as cricket, rounders, or football, we played Polish games - Dwa Ognie, Palant, Ciuciu Babka, etc. The Schooling was endorsed and run by The Gloucestershire Education Committee and at Northwick we had an all Polish teaching staff. When one's parents felt that their off-springs could benefit from English primary schooling at Chipping Campden or Blockley, allowing the child an improved chance of passing an Eleven-Plus Exam, the child had to pass an oral exam in English - no more than a two or three minute chat with the visiting School Inspector, an Englishman, Mr Dubber (remember him? - a bespectacled gentleman, wearing also a hearing aid and driving a white Ford Anglia car - oh, how we truants could espie that white Ford Anglia car and scarper for cover, as it made it's way slowly thro' the camp). In my case I have finished Polish school at the tender age of ten, compulsorily discussed the weather with the eloquent Mr Dubber for all of two minutes (my input was the "yes" "no" bit to his questions of "Is it raining today?" and "Is the sun shining today?" .... and I was off to the Blockley Boys School at the age of 10 and taking my Eleven Plus some months later. My English was very restricted and the early days at Blockley Boys were confusing and tough, I was overawed. The Eleven-Plus? A failure, another statistic in the negative column...!!!::::There is a plus side to all this, and that is my exce
