Hi Wondering if you can help
My Father and mother (Wladek and Ludwika Skraba both now deceased) were at the Hiltingbury camp in Late 1946- early 1947 My Sister was Born there in November 1946 and due to the very cold winter she died at 3 months old in Mid Feb 1947. I am sure that as a good catholic family she would have been buried somewhere nearby. We are looking for her grave as we Only found out last year, after Ludwika died where they were during this time.
Can you help by suggesting where deceased persons were buried during this time or someone who might know. I understand that there is still a Polish club nearby.
We would love to find our sisters grave to ensure she is remembered, it was a promise made to my mother before her passing. She could not remember much about that hard time and as they did in those times has blotted it out and got on with life.
Best regards
Mr Jan Skraba Portishead North Somerset

Hello Jan. Have only just read your message. I can make some suggestions: (1) either you contact the nearest RC church, as they should have church registers which list any funerals that have been carried out. Or contact the local registry office and they may be able to help. Alternatively, contact the Polish Catholic Mission in Devonia Road, Islington, London, as they possibly may have records, as I know that they apparently have records of all the Polish marriages and births that took place. Good luck.

I am a new member. I grew up in Hiltingbury Polish Camp and still live in the area. I hope the following helps in your search for your sister's grave. Pine Road cemetery is the closest to the Camp's location. Hiltingbury Camp was and still is within the Borough of Eastleigh. I think...?...the Library in Eastleigh Town Centre holds lists of burials within some, if not all, of the Borough's cemeteries. The following link gives a description of the cemetery and all cemeteries within the Borough. www.eastleigh.gov.uk/our-community/cemeteries-in-eastleigh.aspxAll the best with your search. Hi Jan ... I am sorry it is nearly 3 years since your post, and I realise you may well have found your answers by now, but I have only just found this marvellous site ... Firstly, although not Polish myself, I lived in Chandler's Ford from 1937 until 1966 ... around 1952, my wife was a Schoolteacher at the 'Camp School', as it was known, in the English Army Camp opposite the Polish Dependents Hostel in Hiltingbury Road, and taught some of the Polish Children from the Hostel ...
Reference Cemeteries ... there were, at that time, 2 Cemeteries in Chandler's Ford, the one closest to the Hostel being 'Cuckoobushes' and the other being, not too far away, in 'Ramalley' ... I have checked the Eastleigh Borough Council Cemeteries Data Base (www.eastleigh.gov.uk/our-community/cemeteries-in-eastleigh/cemetery-database.aspx) and searched for SKRABA in ALL of their Cemeteries, but, unfortunately, nothing comes up ... it is possible, of course, the Data Base has a different, albeit incorrect, spelling of the name, so it would be a case of 'trying' the possibilities ... Hope this has been of some help ... Doug

I am not aware of there ever being a Polish Club in Chandler's Ford, or even in the Borough of Eastleigh ... the nearest one, CURRENTLY, appears to be at Portswood, a suburb of Southampton, about 5 miles south of Chandler's Ford ... the contact details are: Polish Social Club 515 Portswood Road, Southampton, Hampshire SO17 3SA, United Kingdom Phone:(From within the U/K) 023 8055 7849 Regards Doug

Hi Jan, I grew up in Hiltingbury Camp, from 1950 until it closed, we only moved around the corner so I grew up going to that little cemetry in Pine Road and visiting the Polish graves, have you been able to find her grave yet, as your blog was a while ago now, if not then please let me know and I could help you. Kind regards, Ryszarda Raczewska

Was your sister Krystina Skraba born in 1946 in Huntingdon Camp in Huntingdonshire and died in 1947 in Wiltshire? Mothers maiden name Jasnas? Kristina was buried at Everleigh in Wiltshire on 17th Feb 1947. This is the only person who was born and died in the years you stated in the UK. I would look at St Peter's Church, Everleigh, Wiltshire as that appears to be the only grave yard in the village.
