Congratulations Zosiu, I was not only impressed by the work you have put into this site but also very much moved by the memories. I lived in Springhill from approx. 1949/50 to 1958 and from there, when we heard that the camp was to close, we moved to Leicester. It was a magical time and when some of us met up, all of us remembered the wonderful years spent there, with never any rain falling!! just sunshine and of course proper snow. I am getting together some photos for Zosia and hopefully will be able to put some names to these. If anyone would like to get in touch with me my e-mail address is turowicz13@aol.com and maybe some more memories and photos could be added. Zosia's Northwick Park could be the inspiration for more on Springhill.

I came upon it, a Polish friend knew I was interested in life Polish life in Cotswolds in 50's. I went to school at St Catherines Chipping Campden, and Grammar School. As a local 'girl' living in what was a sleepy village of Chipping Campden, the arrival of children from another country was so exciting.I can always remember at the end of each term, Polish children would dress in nation costume and dance and sing for us. I can still rember the first line of the Polish National anthem, badly pronounced no doubt!Polish children were the first people I had ever ment from abroad.I had a friend called Teresa we sat next to each other for years but lost touch when we both left to go to senior school. My first boyfriend who a polish boy he too went on to Grammar School. I have since learned that he died at 32; I went to Campden cemetry and found his grave.I am now 60 and although as a child I could have no idea what horrors the children and families had experienced, I have always had a special feeling for the Polish people who made their home in the Cotswolds.

I found the link on the Kresy-Siberia group. What an interesting site. Although I did not grow up in a camp, my father worked for the PRC until 1949 in a camp near Sheffield. I see from your photos, that the Poles in Manchester, where I lived until 1957, did the same kinds of things -- the processions, the Polish language classes, the Krakowianka folk costumes. Very interesting.

Zosiu, gratulacje. ::

Zosia, what's all this about a 'Nissan Hut'? Sounds like we lived in a car. I always though I grew up in a beczka (barrel). I will always insist on beczka, it sounds more poignant

I have the good fortune to be married to Zbigniew (known as Joe)Piotrowski, who was born and lived in Northwick Park until the age of 16 when he, his parents and his brother, Janek, moved to Swindon. He told me all about the life in Northwick Park and what a great time he had there as a child. We have both been back there many times and have seen the changes that have taken place over the years. Nothing stays the same for ever, sad to say. I have tasted most of the Polish food and love it except for the 'pickled herrings' and the 'pickled mushrooms'. I am led to believe that they are a delicacy but obviously my english upbringing has made me not like them. I look foward to seeing comments from others about this site.

The site gets better as new material is lodged. It really is very good.::::May I through these columns pay due respect to Mr Witold Hartman, the tenacious and lovable "polski dziennikarz" who started much of the work now on this site in Dziennik Polski before Zosia had logged it onto the website. Zosia Biegus is Witolds' daughter and we're so proud that she continues the good work started by her late father close to sixty years ago. ::::If anyone is ever in Warszawa, Witold and Anna Hartmans grave is in the famous Powazki Cemetery. Wieczne odpoczywanie, racz Im dac, Panie...!
congrats...
