Hi
Has anyone got any info about a Polish camp situated near Kiltarlity village about 10 miles north of Inverness?
There was definately a camp there as my father lived and worked there after WW11 until he was demobed in Falkirk.
Any info greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Alan
Many thanks, have looked through this site but no luck with anything near Inverness. I have been told that there was more than one camp after the War near Inverness. I know there were a lot of Poles in or around Invergordon and Alness so there must have also been a camp there?
Anyway I'll keep looking.
Mike

Hi, we are doing research on the Polish camp/s in the Kiltarlity area as part of a community archaeology project. There were three camps in the area, one of which we know for certain to be Polish. It was at Teanacoil, just to the west of Kiltarlity village and is marked on the older OS map. There was a sawmill there and the Poles were involved in forestry work. The remains of the sawmill still stand (just) and can be seen at www.flickr.com and then search for swan-scot - the name of the lady who took the photos, she has a collection on the Flickr site. That is all we know so far. If you know of anything else, please advise..

Hi edf
Yes the camp near Kiltarlity was/is at Teanacoil. I recently walked to it and took lots of photos. I remember clearly being there as a small boy after the Poles had quit the camp. The camp was originally a Canadian troop camp and built by them. Very sad that it can only now be reached by foot.
I was accompanied to the camp by my parents both now close to 90 years of age! They had their first ever dance at this camp over 65 years ago, happy days for them and lots of memories.

I have a childhood memory of going with my mother to visit a Polish guy who lived in a wooden house, surrounded by logs etc., somewhere on the road between Inverness and Beauly. After reading this thread, I can imagine that this was probably in the camp, being written about. I cannot remember the name of the guy, but I can still see his face in my mind's eye.

Hi Lakesidelass, apologies for very long time responding. We knew the Polish man who ran the sawmill post War, he was known as 'John' and we affectionatley called him Uncle John. He eventually went off to London where his wife settled. I believe he was a mate of my fathers.I tried to find the camp again about 3 years ago but sadly couldn't locate it, going back again soon and will try again. Strangley I have searched many papers and websites and cannot find any official mention of this camp but would still love to know what regiment etc were camped there. I am writing a family book at the moment about both my parents and would love some additional information.
