Hi. My name is Simone and I am attempting to gather information with regard to a DP camp in West Sussex located in Monkmead Woods, West Chiltington.
I have visited the site a couple of times and it is known that the Canadian Army where located there but no information with regard to Polish refugees. Does any one have any info, know anyone that was there. My father was in Fairford and then Lilford. I found a slip of paper in his Journal from Valivade, India, that had the DP Camp in West Chiltington address details on.
Any info would be appreciated. Simone.

Hi Simone, This camp definitely existed. I arrived with my family in Southhampton from Valivade with my family 11.3.1948 on the ship Asturias. We were taken to Monkmead camp, West Chiltington and registered as aliens and received identity cards and medical cards. After 10 days we were taken to Ludford Magna camp in Lincolnshire. I was a child then and can't remember, but I'm fairly sure that this was only a transient camp . Barbara

Hi Barbara and Zosia. Thank you for your replies and information. Zosia, I had often browsed the site and never thought to look at other camps - thank you for the lead which always seems to be there waiting to appear and be picked up. Barbara, thank you. From reading a little of the link provided it makes sense that the camp became transient. Do you know if Petworth became the same ?

Hi Zosia and Simone. Thanks for the photo, we lived for almost 3 years in similar huts in Ludford. I know nothing about Petworth.
